Most people are used to getting calls asking for donations to causes they care about and from a charity that sounds vaguely familiar. But the money raised doesn’t always go back directly to your neighbors.
For Bruce Rabuffo and other Hingham residents, the calls weren’t coming from within the town’s borders, but from a New Bedford call center operated by Golden State Marketing on behalf of Our American Veterans, a nonprofit in Georgia.
Of the $70,278 raised in Massachusetts in 2007 for Our American Veterans, or OAVI, as it is identified on its Web site, just 15 percent, $10,542, went back to the charity, according to Attorney General Martha Coakley’s annual report on professional solicitors.
